The Ljubljansko barje is a mosaic of diverse habitats. Many animal species find suitable locations to survive in the area throughout the year. Whereas others prefer to spend a part of their lives in the hinterland of the Ljubljansko barje. The broad forests of the Krim Hill Range, rising in front of you along the southern edge of the Ljubljansko barje plain, are an important overwintering place for many amphibians. These move between different habitats throughout the year. Their path is often full of danger!
Frogs and other amphibians take part in the spring frog wedding en masse. This can take place at various locations, but most species prefer vegetated drainage ditches and pools where there are no hungry fish. After mating, they soon return to land where they spend the rest of the year.
Meadows and hedgerows provide them with plenty of hiding places, shade and food. In autumn, they find an overwintering location. Many amphibians survive unfavourable winter conditions in the forest. They squeeze into a small space under a rock, a root or in a crack in the ground, where they rest until spring. In the first warm and rainy nights of spring, they head again to the spawning grounds en masse.
Migratory paths of amphibians often cross a busy road, where many of them end up under the wheels of speeding cars. In order to enable them to travel safely between their habitats, we can equip the road with underpasses made especially for them.
Permanent fences prevent animals from accidentally walking onto the road. Several road sections of the Ljubljansko barje, recognised in the past as black spots for amphibians, have been set up this way.
Amphibian migrations follow established routes. But many dangers await them. Find a safe way for the frog to get safely from the pond to the forest and back!
